When I try to Capture a windows 10 image I receive a message saying that the Virtual Disk must contain at least one volume (screen shot taken from http://deploycentral.com/topic/324-unable-to-capture-vm/?hl=%2Bvirtual+%2Bdisk+%2Bmust+%2Bcontain+%2Bleast+%2Bvolume ).

I have tried ALL that I could find on this forum but with no luck.

I am using VMware workstation 12.

If I try to capture a WIn 7 image is works just fine.

Hi pphil01,

Couple of things - first, you'll want to make sure you have the latest version of SmartDeploy installed, as Windows 10 support was only added as of SmartDeploy v2.

Beyond that, this error typically indicates the VM is in a bad shutdown state. With a Windows 7 VM on a VMWare platform, you can simply click Start | Shutdown without issue - but with Windows 8.1 and 10, VMWare supports (and defaults to) hybrid shutdown mode. To ensure that the VM is completely shut down, you'll need to use an alternate command-line procedure.

Complete these steps, which will cover another common issue as well:

1. Power on the VM and log in.
2. Launch Windows Update, and check for updates.
3. Install all available updates. Reboot as needed.
4. Repeat steps 3-4 until there are no additional update installations or reboots pending.
5. Launch a command prompt and execute the following command to shut down the VM:

shutdown /s /t 0

6. Retry capture and deployment.

If the issue persists, go ahead and send us your Capture Wizard log at support (at) smartdeploy.com, and we can help troubleshoot further. This is located in C:\SmartDeploy\Logs\Capture.log.

For anyone interested i was able to get around this issue by capturing the image from the smartdeploy iso as described in Appendix 1 in the SmartDeploy User’s Guide (here). This advice was given to me via email by a smartdeploy support rep.

When i have time i want to see if this was maybe caused by creating a VM through Vmware workstation instead of going through the "build" wizard.
